Many gay men have visited a gay sauna at least once in their lives. Whether out of pure curiosity or to act out sexual fantasies, at some point it's the first time for many. If you're looking for a sauna for sex, you'll find one in pretty much every larger city in Germany.

How Do the Different Types of Gay Saunas Differ?

There are basically two different types of gay saunas. On one hand there are gay saunas where sex is the one and only focus and the atmosphere is more like a club: dimmed lighting, club music, darkroom mazes and lockable cabins stocked with lube, condoms and tissues. Many gay sauna chains fall into this category, and sweating it out in the sauna very quickly becomes an afterthought. Since such gay saunas are also open all night, plenty of men who didn't find a one-night stand at the club often show up, especially on weekends after a night of partying. Besides these, larger gay hubs such as Berlin and Cologne also have gay saunas that offer more than just sex.

Gay Sauna – A Spa with a Dash of Sex?

In Berlin, among other places, there are now gay sauna clubs that don't cater exclusively to men who are just after sex. The furnishings and service are more like a real spa: relaxation rooms, generous sauna towels, a bar area and massage rooms... If you just want to unwind, you'll get your money's worth too. Still, even in such gay sauna clubs there are plenty of opportunities to get closer if you're simply looking to let off some steam.

What Are Gay Sauna Parties About?

Many gay sauna clubs host special parties once or several times a month to appeal to different target groups. Under-30 parties, for example, where younger men can stay among themselves, are especially popular. Some gay saunas have certain days of the week when students get discounted admission. So it always pays to check beforehand what's coming up.

What Do I Need to Bring to a Gay Sauna?

Most gay sauna clubs provide their guests with towels and flip-flops. In some gay saunas, an extra fee is charged on top of admission for these. You usually don't have to worry about the rest, at least. Given how important safer sex is to the community, condoms and lube are almost always available for free within easy reach.
